Saxon Magic

Hey magic aficionados!

Introducing "Saxon Magic", the System Agnostic random resource generator. I know, I know, that's a sentence and a half, right? But bear with me.

Wondering what’s tucked inside this mysterious document? Simply put, it's a treasure trove of spells that give off some serious Anglo-Saxon vibes. And when I say “system agnostic”, I mean these spells are like free spirits: all about the magical mojo, without the pesky mechanics tying them down.

Need a sprinkle of inspiration? Get those dice out! With a trusty d12 and a d6, you can whip up something spellbinding from one of the many lists.

Happy rolling, and may your spells always land on target! (Or, you know, hilariously off...)

Some details

By taking a quick peek, you'll notice that there are 12 glittering disciplines. And within each of these, you'll find 6 spells for every power level. Quick math: that’s a lot of magical bang for your buck!

Now, as for the ranks? Picture this progression: starting as a bright-eyed Novice, then climbing the magical ladder to Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master. And if you're feeling particularly spicy, there are Ritual and Forbidden spells awaiting your grasp. Sounds about right, doesn’t it?

Oh, and for a bit of unexpected fun, we’ve sprinkled in mishaps and sanity loss effects. Because what’s magic without a little unpredictability? Mix and match those effects and side effects to keep your players on their enchanted toes.

Happy spell-weaving!

Hi I’m deeply impressed by the job you’ve done with all your projects here but I must say my favorite is this Saxon magic one. I’m very grateful for all the original thinking and the energy you put in there ! I know you designed it to be system agnostic but I’m curious to know: which system did you use it with yourself ? And what systems would you recommend it for ? I am myself considering adapting it to some B/X or Glog (maybe Knave ?). Cheers, L.

Hey, thank you for your comment: highly appreciated.

As for the system(s) I use for my games, well, they are quite a few unfortunately. I say unfortunately because I think this is a big issue. I tend to get excited very easily and can't stick to a single unifying system. During the last few years I've played B/X, OSE, GURPS 3E, GURPS 4E, Basic Roleplaying System, Cairn, Into the Odd, Cypher System, Ironsworn (+ Delve), Forbidden Lands, The One Ring 2E, Pathfinder 2E (very little admittedly), some homebrew systems of my own and I think I'm forgetting something.

I just can't adapt my little fun side projects to all the systems I like. So I keep them system agnostic.

You are of course welcome to take whatever you want and adapt it to a specific system! It would be a honor. And more important, have fun!

Thank you again for your interest!

Brilliant! This is absolutely something i've thought of doing (but secretly hoped someone more talented than me did) and i'm glad i stumbled across it! Look forward to more system-agnostic stuff like this!

You made my day, really. First commenter ever, very very grateful.

I've published this morning the NPCs companion to this one: https://savvydonkeypress.itch.io/saxon-npcs

Feel free to grab it and don't tell anybody I'm working on a bestiary ;)
